CHAPTER 11

ORION

I roamed the dark streets of the city, glaring into the unpleasant brightness of my phone screen. I had meant to comb every last nook and cranny of Anchorage for clan members who were hiding or injured or were simply too pragmatic to do anything other than wait out the storm that had recently passed. But I hadn’t been able to reach Veronica in hours, and her conspicuous absence was now consuming my thoughts.

Growling, I shoved the phone into my pocket. None of my messages had merited even a one-word answer from her. The calls I made went to her voicemail, which I doubted she was currently checking. Wherever Veronica had run off to, it was inaccessible to me. I had the needling suspicion that she’d slipped under my radar on purpose.

And that stoked the fires of my fury into a blazing inferno. It was not a secret that I preferred to keep my close associates, especially lovers, on a short leash. Veronica in particular was a prize I wasn’t willing to lose. The connection I felt to her was too rare to let go.

Of course, I didn’t fully expect a mortal slayer, ages younger than me, to understand her own significance. She needed me to make her into a legacy; without the turning, she’d be more like a cherry blossom, her life beautiful and heartbreakingly brief. I was already determined not to let her fade into a fate as demeaning as obscurity.

But she had churned me into a rage, whether she knew it or not. For reasons I admittedly could not pinpoint, I hadn’t expected to ever be ignored by her. Perhaps it was no more than a foolish assumption on my part that she knew my mind, that she would understand the depth and uniqueness of my feelings and respect them.

Foolish, indeed. At the end of the night, she was raw and untaught, a clay figurine ripe for molding. After years of experience with this very scenario, I should have known to lower my expectations until she had a chance to learn, clearly, what they were. But what could I say? I was at least infatuated with her.

I walked until the sky began to lighten in the east, warning of the day about to dawn. Burning inside, I took the next right turn and headed in the general direction of home. The undercurrent of paranoia in my thoughts told me that Veronica was using the sun as a shield, hiding from me in daylight.

While I wrestled with my temper, the phone in my pocket went off. Like a starved and wild animal, I snatched it. Veronica’s name titled the message she’d finally sent.

Sorry I was MIA. Working on a case.

I frowned deeply. Unacceptable. You cannot cut me off that way.

I didn’t cut you off, Orion. I was busy.

My frown stayed put. Too busy for me?

At the moment, yes. But I’m here now.

The woman’s sheer audacity made me livid, as much as it made me long for her. Immediately, I redirected my course toward the Grand Hotel.
